Founded in 1925, Teamsters Local 814 is Home to New York’s Professional Movers, Art Handlers, Warehouse and Race Track Workers. For nearly 100 years, Teamsters Local 814 has been known as THE mover’s union for NYC and the broader tri-state area. An affiliate of the AFL-CIO’s NYC Central Labor Council, The Building & Construction Trades of Greater New York, and Teamsters Joint Council 16 — Local 814 is the only union recognized by these leading labor federations for the trade of commercial office moving and its related areas of work — new furniture delivery and installation, floor-to-ceiling glass delivery and installation, office liquidation, furniture and record storage.
The Story
For Teamsters Local 814, I developed a fully custom WordPress theme designed to modernize the union’s digital presence and make essential information easier for members and the public to access. The theme was built from the ground up with clean architecture, flexible content tools, and a visual system that reflected the strength and professionalism of the Local. This gave the organization a durable platform for news, campaigns, and member resources.
A central feature of the project was the creation of the Find a Mover tool — a searchable directory that helps businesses and individuals locate commercial moving companies that are signed to a bargaining agreement with Local 814 and in good standing with the union. I designed the data model, built the search and filtering logic, and created an intuitive interface that made it easy to identify reputable, union‑approved movers. This tool strengthened transparency, supported signatory companies, and helped the public make informed choices.
By combining custom theme development with a purpose‑built directory system, I delivered a platform that advanced Local 814’s mission and improved how the union connects with its community. The result is a modern, trustworthy digital resource that supports workers, signatory companies, and anyone seeking a mover aligned with union standards.
